Poll Has Shaheen Winning Senate Seat
A new poll has Democrat Jeanne Shaheen topping Republican Sen. John Sununu in their expected rematch this fall.
A University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll of 555 adults last month had Shaheen ahead, with 54 percent of the vote over Sununu's 37 percent. One percent of those surveyed chose another candidate and 7 percent were undecided.
The numbers haven't changed since polling on the two candidates started in July, which was two months before Shaheen announced her intention to run, said Survey Center Director Andy Smith.
Shaheen, a former governor of New Hampshire, runs strongest among Democrats, liberals and non-religious voters, Smith said. Sununu runs strongest among Republicans, conservatives and regular church-goers, he said.
Sununu beat Shaheen in the 2002 Senate race. The two are the presumed nominees for their respective parties for the election this November.
