After voting for the largest tax increase in history, Sununu now says he's a fiscal conservative
(Manchester, NH) – Senator John E. Sununu’s explanation for his vote against crucial economic stimulus legislation – that it was too expensive – stands in stark contrast to Sununu’s record of voting for out of control Bush budgets that have increased the national debt by 54 percent, to $8.6 trillion. These spending increases represent the largest explosion of debt in our nation’s history, and include $490 billion in spending on the war in Iraq, millions of which is being wasted by rogue contractors and war profiteers that Sununu voted against sanctioning.
“Yesterday’s vote on the economic stimulus package wasn’t a question of spending, it was a question of priorities,” said Bill Lofy, director of the Stop Sununu campaign of the New Hampshire Democratic Party. “Senator Sununu is all too eager to spend taxpayer dollars on the war in Iraq – to the tune of $275 million per day. He’s given President Bush a blank check for the war at every opportunity, he’s voted to raise the debt limit at least six times, to nearly $9 trillion, and just recently he voted to give Big Oil $13 billion in tax giveaways. Yet when it comes to adding funding for heating assistance, unemployment extensions, and giving rebates to seniors and disabled veterans, suddenly John E. Sununu decides he’s a fiscal conservative.”
“The inconvenient truth about Sununu’s record in the Senate is that under Bush-Sununu, our country went from record budget surpluses to record deficits and the largest increase in debt in our nation’s history,” Lofy concluded. “Once again New Hampshire voters are getting a clear glimpse of Sununu’s priorities: reckless spending on the war and tax giveaways for the world’s richest corporations while keeping seniors and disabled veterans from getting the tax rebates that the rest of us will receive.”
