(Manchester, NH) – Two days after John E. Sununu voted against extending unemployment benefits to New Hampshire families, the federal government announced that the nation’s jobless rate has significantly worsened. According to the U.S. Labor Department, over 17,000 Americans lost their jobs in the past month.

“If Senator Sununu gets his way, New Hampshire workers who have lost their jobs in this Bush economy will not receive an extension of unemployment benefits, despite indications that we are entering into a recession,” said Bill Lofy, director of the Stop Sununu campaign of the New Hampshire Democratic Party. “The message to these New Hampshire families from John E. Sununu is clear: you are on your own. What’s worse, Senator Sununu had an opportunity last month to vote for an energy bill that would have created green collar jobs in New Hampshire. Sununu votes not only to kill jobs, but to pull the rug out from workers when they most need assistance.”
