Will Sununu Stand With Bush Again?

Having lavished praise on President Bush after previous States of the Union and voted with the president over 90 percent of the time since arriving in the Senate, will John E. Sununu continue to embrace a president whose agenda the voters of New Hampshire have soundly rejected in recent elections?

As President Bush prepares to deliver his final State of the Union address next Monday, Senator Sununu will have an opportunity to comment on the Bush agenda for 2008. Given the senator’s previous steadfast support for the president, New Hampshire voters want to know if Sununu will continue to support the status quo and the president’s failed policies of the past seven years.
  • When the president wanted to protect a $13 billion giveaway to the oil and gas industry instead of investing in renewable energy initiatives to save money and create jobs, Sununu stood with Bush.
  • When the president rejected a timetable for withdrawing troops from Iraq, Sununu stood with Bush, not once or twice, but 12 times.

  • When the president wanted to increase the federal debt to $9 trillion, Sununu stood with Bush six times.
  • When the president wanted to cut benefits for our nation’s veterans, Sununu stood with Bush. 28 times.

“John E. Sununu has been a rubber stamp for the Bush agenda ever since the president took office,” said Bill Lofy, director of the Stop Sununu campaign of the New Hampshire Democratic Party. “He votes with him 90 percent of the time and has been one of the president’s most vocal supporters in the Senate. It’s no wonder that President Bush said, ‘John Sununu was with me from the beginning.’ When the president announces his agenda for a continuation of 7 years of the status quo, New Hampshire voters should expect Senator Sununu to continue standing with Bush.”
