Iraq
Sununu has supported Bush's failed Iraq policies for years. Even when military experts and the American public realized that we needed a change of course in Iraq, Sununu voted to stick with Bush. He has voted against withdrawing U.S. troops at least nine times.
Sununu has supported the war from day one...
Sununu Voted for Iraq War. In October 2002, Sununu voted for the authorization for the use of force against Iraq. [Vote 455, 10/10/02]
Sununu: US. Forces Greeted As Liberators in Southern Iraq. Shortly after returning from a 2003 trip to Iraq, Sununu was asked about the attitude of Iraqis toward American forces and said that in large portions of the country Americans had been greeted as liberators. Sununu said, "In Basra, in the south, definitely viewed as liberators." [MSNBC, Hardball, 8/26/03]
Sununu: Insurgents Making Attacks Are "Dead Enders." In 2003, Sununu said, "Look, there are certainly some outside fighters in Iraq. I think there are real questions as to whether they have been recently attracted to Iraq or whether they've been there for six or eight months or even more. I think it is mostly Fedayeen Saddam and the dead-enders, so to speak, Ba'ath Party members, those loyal to Saddam Hussein, that want to create anarchy in order that he might return to power. That's what the bombing against the United Nations was all about." [CNBC, Capital Report, 8/26/03]
And he continues to today...
Sununu Has Voted Five Times Against Withdrawal in 2007 Alone. In July 2007, Sununu voted to block the Levin-Reed proposal to bring most U.S. troops home from Iraq by April 30, 2008, with the withdrawal beginning within 120 days. This was the fifth time this year that Sununu voted against withdrawal. [Vote 252, 7/18/07; Vote 147, 4/26/07; Vote 126, 3/29/07,Vote 116, 3/27/07; Vote 75, 3/15/07; NPR, 7/17/07]
Sununu Rejected Timeline on Iraq Pullout. In April 2007, Sununu stated his opposition to democratic efforts to redeploy troops from Iraq. Sununu added that he was uncomfortable with Congress offering solutions for stabilizing specific parts of Iraq, saying that Congress should stick to funding the conflict. Sununu said, "It's a mistake for politicians to go too far and micromanage." [Nashua Telegraph, 4/3/07]
Sununu Saw Improvement in Iraq, Encouraged by "New Level of Cooperation in Western Iraq." During a visit to Portsmouth in April 2007, Sununu discussed his recent trip to Iraq, and spoke about the progress he had seen there. Sununu said, "There are clear signs of improvement, I was most encouraged by the new level of cooperation in western Iraq." [Portsmouth Herald, 4/6/07]
Sununu Said he Would Continue to Support Iraq War. In April 2007, Sununu said that despite the unpopularity of the war and a resolution passed by the New Hampshire House of Representatives, he would continue to support the war in Iraq. Sununu said, "No one was happy with the lack of progress in 2006, I'm not happy with the progress, but it is in our national interest to have a stable Iraq." [Eagle Tribune, 4/3/07]
He is scared to answer to the public...
Sununu Ran Away From Reporters When Asked About Iraq Escalation Resolution. When reporters approached Sununu to discuss President Bush’s proposed troop escalation plan earlier this year, he "took off in a sprint, determined to say as little as possible about a nonbinding resolution opposing President Bush's troop-escalation plan." All he would say was, "You know where I stand," adding, "I'm still looking at the resolutions "as he fled down stairways at the Capitol." [Washington Post, 2/5/07]
