"LIE" HEAP: THE SUNUNU RECORD ON HOME HEATING ASSISTANCE

Sununu talks about funds for LIHEAP, but he has voted against funding seven times in Washington

(Manchester, NH) - John Sununu has signed many letters expressing support for the LIHEAP home heating assistance program and sent out numerous press releases touting his "leadership" on the issue, but in Washington D.C., he has voted seven times against additional funding for the program, including one vote against the program as recently as six months ago. With the price of oil hovering near $130 per barrel, New Hampshire families need a Senator in Washington who actually stands up for them, not Sununu's empty rhetoric.

Web Video: Sununu's Cash from Iraq War Profiteers

Sununu votes to protect Iraq war contractors; accepts $118,750 from contractors, including $10,000 this quarter alone

The New Hampshire Democratic Party today released a web video detailing John Sununu’s history of protecting Iraq war profiteers and supporting wasteful contracts that make George Bush’s friends wealthy. As the video shows, Sununu consistently voted against investigating the awarding of contracts in Iraq and against stiffer penalties for Iraq war profiteers, and at the same time he accepted $108,750 in campaign contributions from Iraq war contractors. Yesterday, it was revealed in Sununu’s FEC report that he has accepted an additional $10,000 from Iraq war contractors this quarter alone, even after reports of fraudulent reconstruction contracts.

BREAKING: WILL SUNUNU STAND UP TO BUSH'S MEDICARE VETO?

Sununu's $650,000 in campaign cash from the insurance industry has bought two votes so far -- it may yet buy a third

(Manchester, NH) - Today, President Bush vetoed the bipartisan proposal to fix Medicare reimbursement rates and endangered access to health care for over 200,000 New Hampshire seniors and disabled individuals. John Sununu has voted twice against the proposal because he believed it was more important to protect insurance industry profits than access to health care for New Hampshire seniors, but today's veto means Sununu now has an opportunity to reverse his position and stand up for his constituents instead of the insurance industry.

FULLER CLARK, BURLING, MCLEOD: SUNUNU'S HEALTH CARE PROPOSAL WILL HURT SMALL BUSINESSES

(Manchester, NH) - The Berlin Daily Sun reports today that state elected officials and a Laconia businessman denounced John Sununu's health care proposal yesterday, pointing out that the proposal would hurt small businesses in the state and "preempt state insurance laws and change rates based on a person's age or health status." [Berlin Daily Sun, 7/15/08] State Senators Martha Fuller Clark and Pete Burling joined Representative and Senate candidate Martha McLeod and Laconia businessman Pat Wood in opposing Sununu's proposal because it would drive insurance costs up, similar to when the state "repealed the community rating system, in 2003, allowing insurance companies to vary insurance rates based on the health of the workers."[ Berlin Daily Sun, 7/15/08]

SUNUNU'S DISTRACTION: DON'T MIND MY VOTE TO BLOCK HEALTH CARE FOR 200,000 NH SENIORS

One day after voting against health care access for Medicare patients, Sununu announces fake election-year proposal

(Manchester, NH) - Just one day after voting for the second time to endanger access to health care for New Hampshire's 200,000 Medicare enrollees, John Sununu today announced a phony election-year gimmick to distract from his record of blocking meaningful health care reform. The proposal, S. 3072, has just one other co-sponsors, a right-wing Republican from Mississippi who like Sununu is facing a tough battle for reelection.

BIPARTISAN VOTE OVERRIDES SUNUNU AND BUSH, PRESERVES MEDICARE

New Hampshire reacts to Sununu's continued votes against seniors, disabled, military retirees

(Manchester, NH) - John Sununu again voted yesterday with George Bush and against a bipartisan proposal to preserve access to health care for New Hampshire's 200,000 plus Medicare beneficiaries, but a broad bipartisan coalition overrode Sununu's and Bush's opposition by a vote of 69-30. The proposal prevents a scheduled 10.6% cut in payments to doctors who treat Medicare patients, but Sununu opposed the measure because it would reduce profits for insurance companies that participate in Medicare to levels equal with doctors.

Sununu's dishonest excuse for endangering Medicare

Despite growing pressure on John Sununu to reverse his position on a recent Medicare fix bill and stand up for 200,000 seniors and disabled Granite Staters, Sununu continues to offer only a dishonest excuse for his vote.

Ten days ago, Sununu cast the deciding vote to block consideration of H.R. 6331, a proposal to prevent a 10.6% cut in the rate Medicare reimburses doctors for seeing Medicare patients. [Senate Vote #160, 6/26/08] Sununu had promised he would prevent the rate cut from taking effect, but he voted against the proposal because it would correct the rate that private insurance companies are paid through the Medicare Advantage program -- they currently receive as much as 119% of what doctors are paid under traditional Medicare. [The Hill, 7/1/08]

A growing coalition of seniors, doctors, veterans and other Medicare participants is urging Sununu to change his vote. But Sununu is still siding with insurance companies, protecting their extra profits because they have given him nearly $650,000 in campaign contributions.

TOMORROW: SUNUNU'S DECIDING VOTE FOR "MEDICARE MELTDOWN" TAKES EFFECT

Last week Sununu backed Bush and cast deciding vote against correcting Medicare reimbursement rates

(Manchester, NH) - John Sununu's deciding vote last week against stopping a 10% fee cut for doctors who treat patients under Medicare will take effect tomorrow, resulting in what the American Medical Association calls a "Medicare meltdown." [New York Times, 6/30/08] Last Friday, John Sununu voted with George Bush and cast the deciding vote against the reimbursement rate correction, which means many doctors will reduce the number of Medicare patients they see, making health care less accessible to over 40 million seniors who use the program.

SUNUNU ON GAS PRICES: I CAN'T HELP YOU

Sununu's approach won't help for years, is a known psychological gimmick

(Manchester, NH) - As gas prices continue skyrocketing above $4 per gallon, John Sununu hosted a conference call with reporters yesterday to discuss his response. His message to New Hampshire: I can't help you.

"John Sununu admits his approach won't do anything to bring down the cost of gas, and he's even said there's nothing Washington can do to help," said Alex Reese, press secretary for the NHDP's Coordinated Campaign. "Apparently, John Sununu doesn't know that he was elected to work on solving problems. Instead, for six years in the Senate, Sununu has just thrown his hands in the air and hasn't even tried to address the difficult challenges facing New Hampshire and the nation. Sununu's won't-even-try attitude is just part of the problem."

SUNUNU AGAIN FAILS NH VETERANS

Despite his lip service, Sununu has opposed funding for the VA and for veterans' health care

(Manchester, NH) - Secretary of Veterans Affairs James Peake visited the Manchester VA Medical Center today and announced he doesn't foresee that New Hampshire will ever have a full service VA again. [AP, 6/24/08] John Sununu visited with Peake at the VA this morning and issued a press release saying he "thanked the Secretary for coming to New Hampshire to tour the Manchester facility and learn more about the needs of the veterans it serves." [Sununu Press Release, 6/24/08]
